Shop Tour '06
(around the greater Jackson, MS area)
We met at Wendy's in Byram, MS at
11am and had lunch. A good crowd gathered to go on it. Then we headed out to the
first stop on the tour which was at Larry Cantrell's shop.
We filled up Larry's driveway with cars. What else are
ya gonna do on such a cold rainy day where it could sleet or snow any minute.
After Larry's we headed over to the shop in Pearl, MS where several rods are
under construction. Like Gene Roberson's '40 Packard as seen in these pictures.
Here's George Phillips' '36 Packard.
Here's Eric Knight's (soon to be a
convertible) '39 Chevy.
From there we went to Rounman's in
Brandon where we saw Danny's Coupe being worked on.
Next door was another Coupe being
worked on.
Down the road and around a few
corners we looked at these projects.
Then we went to Jim Saville's. Jim
likes the year 1938 as he has one of just about everything Chevy made that year
except a 4-door.
Our last stop on the tour was at Vic Boggs' shop where he is building the "Shades of Dream" '48 Chevy Pickup. Here's a little background on the project as told by Vic: "The project started with 2 cabs, a 50 and a 48, 1 front clip, 5 rear fenders, a chassis from a 76 El Camino and a warped imagination. The cab was stretched 15" using the back half of the roof off a 50 Ford Sedan to give the top a coupe look. Also chopped 6 1/2", sectioned 5" and channeled 4". The top of the truck is now the same height as my 50 Mercury. The running boards were replaced with a piece that looks more like a rocker panel. The front has deeply frenched vertical quad headlights and a roll pan that looks like a hood turned upside down. The bed was custom fabbed to be 15" shorter thus retaining stock wheel base and is welded to the cab for a one piece body construction. I had originally planned to stand the 59 Chevy tail lights up and form a fin but they were way to tall. Since I'll be running a 250 inline Chevy six, there will be six exhaust pipes run from the engine back and all will exit in the center of the rear roll pan. I haven't quite figured how to get fire out of all of them, but I will."
This was a full day that lasted until about 5:30pm and it is only a sampling of the many cars under construction in this area.
